TFS is an attempt to rate sports teams using minimal information (namely, the scores from the games!) The program uses a least-squares method to calculate the ratings from the real game data. To do this, a function must be devised to determine how much "better" the winning team is than the losing team based on the score of a game played between the two teams. This function is called the Game Outcome Measure (gom). The ratings are calculated such that the difference in the ratings will mimic the gom as calculated from real game information as best as possible. Therefore, the ratings can be used to predict future game outcomes.

Results are reported here for three different gom definitions.

Betting

Of the last two definitions, the Flat definition does not reward a team for running up the score, whereas the Straight definition does. The Flat defintion is useful for predicting straight-up winners (betting the money-line) whereas the Straight definition is more useful for predicting winners against the spread.

If TFS worked flawlessly as a predictive system, I would be a wealthy man. It should be noted that I still have to work for a living, so be sure to read my disclaimer.

There is a very good compendium of ranking and rating systems available on the Web as part of the rec.sport.football.college newsgroup page which is maintained by David Wilson. Also be sure to check out the College Football Ranking Comparasion page maintained by Kenneth Massey as part of Massey's Ratings and Rankings page.
